Advantage Martial Arts: A Greater Advantage

My name is Dalton Dishman. I’m a black belt, and this is my fourth year as a student at Advantage Martial Arts. Martial Arts has been the single most beneficial activity I’ve ever had the blessing to do and continue to do for so long. Looking back now I can see how morals, and the lessons of respect I have been taught by Master Phillips, have come to influence my life in a completely metamorphic way. These lessons have taught me when to speak, when to remain silent, and when to simply perform my task to the best of my ability. These lessons have taught me to always give my best effort, to use every little bit left in the tank, and push my spirit to the limit. Master Phillips never forces these lessons upon students, but instead, she guides them to realize and apply them in their lives. Lessons that I hope students after me will see, and move to apply in their lives. There is more to Advantage than just forms, sparring, and board-breaking. While these are all fun and interesting things, I believe the real value of Advantage Martial Arts can be found in Master Phillips and the lessons she passes onto her students. Lessons that were once given to her by her master, and his master before him.

“The ideal teacher guides his students but does not pull them along; he urges them to go forward and does not suppress them; he opens the way but does not take them to the place.” - Confucius
